Living in Cairns is a long way from anywhere in the racing world but the region has produced its fair share of talented riders and Mitch Evans is part of the current crop of far North Queenslanders making waves in motocross.
“ I started riding when I was pretty young but my family didn’t always travel to a lot of the Australian events as the costs to get down to Brisbane and Sydney are huge so my brother and I as well as cousin (and now team mate) Jackson Richardson would ride a lot at home or just do local races.
“It was pretty cool as there was always someone fast to ride against even without travelling. Wilson Todd, Caleb Ward plus a few older guys like Wade Hunter and Todd Waters were around so it was pretty cool to race that level of rider each weekend.
School has always been a priority and I have just finished grade 12 last year. Last year it was tough to manage racing and school so this year I have decided to defer Uni and race full time with the support of Serco Yamaha in the MX2 class and see where it takes me.
The last couple of years have been good and I feel like I have continued to improve. I won the SXD championship in 2015, then the MXD championship in 2016 but now the real hard work begins in MX2 and I have stepped up all my training for the long motos and the faster riders.
Away from riding it has always been school and I have never really had a lot of spare time. I still don’t now because I’m trying to make the most of this opportunity and establish myself as a professional racer.
