HISTORY

The distributor-backed team began back in 1995 when World Motocross Vice Champion of 1989 (and now General Manager) Jeff Leisk decided to put his money where his heart is and invest in Australian motocross and its riders.

He led the team’s initial incarnation from the front, coming out of retirement to act as lead rider to a rookie named Craig Anderson on the original Castrol KTM team.

Two years later in 1997 Craig Anderson performed fantastically, winning the Australian Motocross Championship, the Supercross Masters and the Thumper Nationals all in the same year.

A young named Brett Metcalfe gave KTM a Thumper Nats 400cc title in 2000, and then in 2001 Craig Anderson and began KTM’s four-year supercross title- winning streak. He won Masters crowns in ’01 and ’02 while Jay Marmont clinched national championships in ’03 and ’04.

Throwing in the motocross and thumper championships Ando sealed in his stellar ’02 season KTM Australia’s reputation for winning titles had been rmly established.

The team was outsourced during a JDR era which yielded more championships, and then came back in house for season 2013 to join forces with a technical partner of ours for ten years now – Motorex.

Todd Waters and an MX1 rookie named Kirk Gibbs came incredibly close to giving the Motorex KTM team a championship in its debut year.

In 2015 Kirk Gibbs and the KTM Race Team took out the prestigious MX1 class championship winning a vast amount of races throughout the year and completing the motocross championship as the victor.

2016 saw the KTM Race Team include the MX2 bike of Caleb Ward under their umbrella with a view to giving a fantastic prospect an opportunity to become a part of their winning team. Unfortunately, both Kirk and Caleb missed out on their prospective championships that year. Kirk lead the MX1 championship right up until the final moto and Caleb chased for the championship in MX2 down to the wire.

2017 will see Kirk Gibbs and a renewed Luke Styke take on the MX1 class for what is set to be a fantastic, very competitive season.
